Three men are in custody after they were arrested by police in a dramatic kidnap attempt of an Irish national in the lobby of the Bintumani hotel Monday night.
According to reports the Irish national (name withheld) was in town sometime last year, when he was defrauded approximately eight hundred thousand dollars ($800,000) in a gold scam. Apparently he was intimated to an extent that he decided to leave the country.
However some Sierra Leonean partners who are privy to the large investment portfolio of the Irish national which is estimated to be in the region of 7 to 8 million dollars invited the Irish man into the country with the promise to investigate the scam and bring the perpetrators to book.
The Joint Drugs Interdiction Task Force/Transnational Organised Crime Unit (JDITF) was reportedly notified about the issue.
Reportedly the Irish man was being questioned at the JDITF when he requested to go back to his hotel to retrieve some documents to aid the investigators. What happened next was nothing short of an action movie.
At the Bintumani Hotel lobby, the Irish national was accosted by some men who physically grabbed him and under gun point placed handcuffs on his hands then manhandled him into a waiting blue Mercedes 200 with the registration number ABE 040.
However as God would have it somebody alerted the Police about the incident and a mobile team was immediately dispatched to intercept and prevent the kidnapping.
The vehicle was reportedly chased and intercepted along the Lumley beach road by the Police and inside the vehicle was the Irish national in handcuffs.
The driver and two other occupants were also arrested and taken to the JDITF headquarters.
The three men arrested were Police Constable 11776 Alimamy Mansaray who is a Close Protection Unit officer (bodyguard) attached to the President, Ignatius Thomas Information Officer State House and Alhassan Bangura a Mines Monitoring Officer. They are presently helping Police with their investigations.
