Residents around the location of Mende Church at Kissy Bye-Pass Road in the East End of Freetown, at about 5:30 am last Week End experienced the shock of their life when a Nissan Maxima with registration number AFB 363 running at high speed, plunged into two stationary Taxis, leaving three people in a critical condition.
The scene of the accident was conspicuously dramatic. The vehicle that was in motion having plunged into the two stationary taxis completely pushed them in separate directions off the road, and subsequently somersaulted and landed on its side facing its previous direction.
According to eye witnesses, the driver of the Nissan Maxima, allegedly named “Orga” was over speeding from the direction of Leonco House Fuel Station at Old Road, loudly playing music in his car with a lady by his side as he sped along the road.
Apparently he could not control the speed at which he was running as he was negotiating a sharp curve very close to the Mende Church. Inadvertently, he ran into the two Nissan Sunny taxis with registration numbers AEK 582 and ADU 541 respectively. The two taxis were visibly damaged and one could hardly believe if occupants of the three vehicles came out alive.
Eventually there was one apprentice in each of the two the taxis. Both of them were sleeping. One of them was left in a critical condition after the crash and was rushed to the hospital. The other sustained serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
The driver of the offending vehicle took to his heels to avert possible mob justice from community youths. The lady that was with him in the vehicle sustained a serious cut on her forehead down to her chin. She was left in the car bleeding and was aided by community youths to the nearby hospital for treatment.
The Kissy Old Road, particularly the Mende Church axis is notorious for gruesome accidents. This area of Bye Pass Road is relatively narrow and zigzagged; giving reason for careful driving when approaching the curves. It could be recalled that about two months ago, a commercial mini bus drove into one of the drainages leaving one person dead and several passengers gravely injured.
At press time the vehicles that were involved in the accident were still at the scene.
