The Chairman of the Kambia District Council, Samuel Sankoh on Friday, 20th January 2012 handed over a feeder roads rehabilitation project costing Le 1.1 billion to MAKSAM Construction Service Company.
The project is jointly sponsored by CDCD/JICA, and the ceremony took place at the rehabilitation site at Fonkia village, Magbema chiefdom in the Kambia District.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ambassador Dauda Kamara, said the challenge of completing the project is for all those who are involved in its implementation. He reminded the beneficiaries and the contractor of their common responsibility to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated implementation period.
He encouraged them to sum up courage, noting that courage is one virtue that helped countries like Japan to become great donor countries.
The CDCD Project Manager, Hirabayashi, described the cooperation between Japan and Sierra Leone as strong and good, adding that despite the tsunami that took place in Japan, his country is still committed to supporting Sierra Leone.
He disclosed the project cost of Le 1.1 billion and expressed satisfaction over the level transparency exhibited by the Kambia Council and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority giving out the project. He referred to the procurement process as best practice which should be emulated by all district councils.
PC Bai Farama Tass Bubu Ngbak of Magbema Chiefdom warned his people against theft of the construction materials stating that anyone caught will face the full force of the law. He called on the five Section Chiefs to work closely with the council in the provision of labor to ensure the speedy completion of the project.
Mohamed Alie Kamara of the MAKSAM Construction Company expressed commitment to finish the project within the stipulated time.
An officer of the District Council, Alfred Lahai said the project is an addition to the development projects undertaking by the government in many parts of the country. He urged the people to consider the project as their own and cautioned the contractor against the pending rainy season.
