US$1m boost for school feeding programme

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has recently made a contribution of US$1,069,160 towards the implementation of the World Food Programme supported school feeding and nutrition programmes.The donation was made on behalf of the German Government and was part of a German Multilateral contribution of 11.5 million euros to the World Food Programme (WFP) for its development project worldwide.
A joint release from the German Embassy and WFP, states that “under the WFP supported school feeding programme in the country, which is part of the current WFP country programme assistance to Sierra Leone, a total of 180,000 school children in 691 primary schools in the districts of Koinadugu, Port Loko, Kambia, Tonkolili and Kailahun are provided with daily school meals at school.”
A further 15,000 school children in non-formal educational establishments and skills centres are also provided with daily school meals under the same programme.
The nutrition programme, the release states also, supports the implementation of supplementary feeding programmes to some 20,000 severely and moderately malnourished children and their mothers in nine districts of the country.
The allocation to Sierra Leone has been used to purchase a total of 1,490 metric tonnes of commodities, including cereals, sugar, vegetable oil and blended foods for the two programmes.
