Chief Government Forensic Pathologist, Dr Owizz Koroma, Friday told journalists that there were no signs of “physical assault,” or “sexual intercourse” when he performed an autopsy on 18year old Halimatu Kamara who died in Kenema last week.
Dr Owiss Koroma who disclosed that he had seen more dead bodies than any other pathologist in the sub-region explained that heDr Owiss extended his condolence to the family of the deceased and said he had seen more dead bodies than any other pathologist in the sub-region. “was informed by 4 pm on that particular day that something had transpired all the way in Kenema but they did not take me there but brought the corpse for post mortem at the Connaught Hospital.”
He went on “The corpse arrived at about 7-7:30 and all of a sudden I was attacked and abused that they had put a billion Leones into my account to give a distorted post mortem report.”
The pathologist disclosed “in the presence of almost all sectors I did a thorough post mortem which will not only require a diagnosis but you do have to express an opinion which makes you a consultant.”
“I externally examined the 18 year old but I found out that no part was missing as the body was complete on average but extremely dehydrated.”
The cause of that dehydration, he said, was that the “beautiful young lady” might have lost a lot of fluid and that amount of fluid would not have been lost within 24 or 48 hours, “it must have been a continuous loss” he said.
He went on, “I checked the mouth, teeth every thing and found out that she was not a virgin and interestingly she was just finishing her menstrual cycle. I decided to do the internal examination which is from head to toe, the glands were normal and I found out that there were no forms of manual strangulation. There were also no cuts or wounds on any part of her body; the only marks on her hand was where the Doctor gave her the IV infusion for her dehydration.”
Dr Koroma said he looked at the lungs of the deceased and found out that they were hemorrhagic, which meant they were bloody and added that he examined the stomach which had some contents of cucumber and groundnut soup which he took samples of.Dr Koroma said he looked at the lungs of the deceased and found out that they were haemorrhagic, which meant they were bloody and added that he examined the stomach which had some contents of cucumber and groundnut soup which he took samples of.
“Interestingly as I was examining the intestine it was empty which was responsible for the dehydration because she was dieting, I also examined the liver which was very pale and congested. I looked at the kidneys and interestingly an uncle of the deceased had some medical background and as soon as I removed the kidney he shouted. The left kidney was totally bad but the right was better,” he noted.
The Doctor explained that he looked at the endocrine of the deceased which, he said, was bad for the deceased and the pancreas which was small and that morphologically when the pancreas suffered “you do not produce enough or there is total absence of insulin the only hormone produced by the pancreas which does not go to various cells”.
He also mentioned that the test for blood sugar in her showed 90milimus per liter, explaining that the normal level should be between 5-8 and disclosed that the cause of the coma was because of diabetes
“There was no physical assault, no sexual intercourse… she died because of her underlining pathology,” he ended.
