Camp Canada Athletics Club will hold its 6th edition annual inter house sport meet at the Government Trade Centre playing grounds in Dockyard, Freetown, on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November 2017.
Four house colours representing the names of past and present athletics enthusiasts will be competing in the two-day meet. The houses are Mohamed A. Bokum (Blue), Hindolo S. Sandy (Green), Hon. Alie Kalokoh (Red) and Arnold Morgan (Yellow).
Athletes will be competing in track and field events ranging from discuss, javelin, shot put, 4×100 mtrs, 4×400 mtrs, 800 mtrs, 400 mtrs, 10,000 mtre, 3,000 mtrs, all house relay, 15,000 mtrs walking race, 100 and 200 mtrs sprints and other short sprints events for junior boys and girls. Invited clubs and media institutions will as well compete in the invitation relay.
The organizers are hopeful of staging a successful event as in the case of the past 5 editions which they uses as an avenue to scout promising athletes that are now representing their club, Camp Canada, and both the junior and senior national teams.
Camp Canada has been the foundation of athletics in the country, as they’ve produced series of athletes in sprint, middle and long distance events in the past 15 years. The club has eventually became the home of sprinters.
The Head Coach of the Club, Alim Kamara, said the meet is not just an ordinary competition, but it is an event that showcases the qualities of young athletes, and it serves as a time trial for senior athletes who are preparing to challenge in the upcoming Traditional Boxing Day Sport which will be held at the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Tuesday 26 December this year.
“This is where our top athletes set the benchmark before facing off on Boxing Day. That is just one significant reason of staging our inter house sport meet,” Kamara opined.
Sierra Leone’s fastest sprinter, Ishmael Dudu Kamara, the Captain of Alie Kalokoh House (Red), believes they have a very strong team of athletes to win. Claiming, most of the best sprinters and long distance runners are part of their house.
Dudu boasted, “We are the best house in the competition with a team of young and experienced athletes that are capable of winning all the track events and also challenge to finish in favourable positions in the actions on the field”.
The Captain of the defending Champions, Mohamed A. Bokum house (Blue), Mohamed L. Bangura admitted that with the support of their manager, they will retain the title with ease. All athletes in their house are injury free and they are well set to compete against the other competitors.
Captains of the two other houses, Mariama Kadija Conteh of Green and James Kobba of Yellow are also dogged to win the title despite the fact that they lack the qualities of the two other houses Red and Blue that have handful of top rated athletes.
At the end of the meet, medals, trophies and certificates will be distributed to deserving winners.
